About the role: We want to find a coach who is enthusiastic and ready to build a strong relationship with the captain, players and the wider club. Our ideal coach should be an excellent communicator, with clear strategies, tactics and training. We want training sessions to be high intensity and focussed, but ideally keeping the fun atmosphere that has served us well in the past. As well as leading the men’s 1st team, we would like our new coach to engage with wider plans to develop players throughout the men’s section, and to help develop the club’s internal coaches. Our ideal candidate would be experienced or at least comfortable being involved in such projects. The exact nature of the role is somewhat flexible depending on the candidate. To some extent, we will consider the candidate’s own vision for the role. As specific examples, we will consider a player coach role for the right candidate and we may be able to extend the coaching responsibilities if desired (with corresponding remuneration). Duties include but are not necessarily limited to: Key responsibilities Set strategic objectives and plans for the season. Plan and lead a weekly training session for men’s 1st team (starting in August*). Attend Saturday matches to manage the team, including pre-game warm-up and post-game debrief. Attend preseason matches to manage the team ahead of the league start date in September/October*, including pre-game warm-up and post-game debrief. Deliver matchday tactics, review matchday performances and adjust training plans accordingly throughout the season. Manage player performance and provide feedback to develop both the team and individual players. Input to men’s 1st team selection decisions. Additional responsibilities (subject to discussion) Work with 1st and 2nd men’s team’s captains and coaches to build a more synchronised squad. Assist with identifying talented players throughout the club and developing them into future men’s 1st team players. Support other internal coaches to develop their coaching skills, if needed. Additional coaching opportunities for other teams may be available. *Dates subject to change based on COVID-19 developments. Requirements for candidates: A coaching qualification or equivalent. We will consider those without a formal qualification, but with sufficient relevant coaching experience. Coaching experience appropriate to the level of the role. Eligible to work in the UK (holding a valid UK/EU passport or work permit). English speaking. Additional information: We will consider a player-coach role if the candidate wants to. The club may be able to offer accommodation in West Hampstead as part of the remuneration package. Home games and training are at Whitefield School, Claremont Road, Brent Cross, NW2 1TR. The club shares a clubhouse with Hampstead Cricket Club: Lymington Road, West Hampstead, NW6 1 HZ. Salary: This is a paid role with fees subject to agreement of the role’s scope and based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. We may be able to offer accommodation during the season as part of the package. How to apply: Please send a coaching CV and a covering letter to Paul Cohen, coaching officer, and Alex Stobbart, men’s 1st team captain, at: firstname.lastname@example.org before Friday 3 July (23:59 BST). About West Hampstead Hockey Club’s men's 1st team 2019/20 was our men’s 1st team debut season in South Premier Division 1, after promotion the previous year. The team secured survival in that league, under captain Alex Stobbart, and want to improve their performance for the next season by striving for a significantly better league position. In light of the proposed league restructure in 2021/22, the team also want to review their longer term objectives. The team is a diverse group with a number of players experienced at a high level in the UK and overseas. The captain is ambitious, dedicated and keen to take the squad to a new level of performance, and will expect to build a strong relationship with the new coach to achieve this. This season, we also want to build a stronger pathway for developing players from the wider 1st and 2nd squads into strong 1st team players, and to identify talented individuals throughout the club to coach them into future 1st team players. There would be opportunities for the new coach to feed into this aspect of player/performance development as well as the regular coaching of the men’s 1st team.
